How are your Interpersonal Skills?

Interpersonal skills – to some people interpersonal relationships, empathy and social responsibility come easily. Whereas for others dealing with people can be slightly more challenging. In the EQ-i 2.0 model, this area explores one’s ability to interact with others as well as developing and maintaining relationships based on trust. People that are good with others can inspire trust and thrive well in teams and situations where they are required to deal with people.

There are three subscales in the interpersonal area, they are:

• Interpersonal relationships – skills of developing relationships and nurturing relationships
• Empathy – the ability to understand and to appreciate the feelings of others, behaving in a way that respects the feelings of others and understanding their perspectives
• Social responsibility – demonstrating cooperation and showing concern for others and their welfare, acting responsibly and contributing to society

The power of appreciating the perspective of others, even if you do not agree with it, then articulating your comprehension makes the other person feel that you have really listened and understood what they are feeling. This exchange is essential in achieving successful interpersonal relationships. By focusing on others including the wider community can be beneficial to all parties including your own as you gain new perspectives. Balancing all areas of emotional intelligence is vital in achieving an effective level of emotional and social functioning as well as overall well being, which is so important to everyone.
